Kym Scott – Early Childhood Consultant

Unpacking the Curriculum – Kym Scott

In her presentation Kym will interpret the curriculum for funded non-maintained nursery settings; the role of adults and how to make the most of ‘teachable moments’ in her own exciting and unique style.

Ben Hine – Professor of Applied Psychology, University of West London.

Exploring Gender in the Early Years – Professor Ben Hine

Ben will explore gender in early childhood and the positive influence early years practitioners and settings can have on young children during this period.

After lunch, there will be an opportunity for you to attend two different workshops. Here are the workshops you can choose from:

Workshops 1 12:40pm – 13:25pm;

1a – ‘Y Wariar Bach’ (Available to all. Welsh): Leisa Mererid will introduce her new book – ‘Y Wariar Bach’ (‘The Little Warrior’). In this practical workshop, Leisa will demonstrate how to introduce yoga and breathing exercises to young children.

1b – ‘Children have Rights!’ (Available to all. Welsh): An interactive introduction to a ‘Children’s Rights in the Early Years’ resource and training by the Children’s Commissioner for Wales Office.

1c – ‘ABC of Opera’ (Available to all. Bilingual): Join ABC of Opera in this musical session. Mark Llewelyn Evans believes passionately that every child should be able to fulfil their dreams, and through ABC’s learning methods it’s obvious that this possible, so AMDANI PLANT CYMRU! (ANY BODY CAN!).

1ch – ‘Unpacking the curriculum’ (Available to all. English): Join Kym Scott to discuss how we deliver high quality and effective interactions with young children. Kym is passionate about developing warm and positive relationships between practitioners and children and offering authentic and purposeful play opportunities.

1d – ‘Disneymania’ (Available to all. English): In this workshop Professor Ben Hine will introduce his research – ‘Disneymania’. Ben will offer opportunities to explore some of the most popular elements of the Disney franchise and the influence this medium has on young children and the way they think and behave.

1dd – ‘Gwyn Elis – I am good and effective’ (Available to all. Welsh, with simultaneous translation): In this workshop Gwyn Ellis from Portal Training will help us celebrate our successes in our settings and will consider how we share our good and effective practice with others.

 

Workshops 2 13:35pm – 14:20pm;

English): In this workshop Kym Scott will explore the role of the effective environment, the enabling adults and the engaging experiences that need to be offered in an early years setting.

To close the day there will be a panel of experts to answer your questions including Dr Gwenllian Lansdown Davies – Mudiad Meithrin’s Chief Executive, Ruth Rowlands – Team Manager of Childcare and Play – Care Inspectorate of Wales (CIW), Jonathan Cooper – Assistant Director Estyn and Averil Petley – Head of Foundation Learning – Welsh Government.
