Mudiad Meithrin is pleased to launch ‘AwDUra’ – a new project aimed to encourage Welsh speaking voices from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities to write stories for young children in Welsh.

We are looking for people aged 18 and over who are from Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic communities to join ‘AwDUra’ – a project that will provide support from two big names from the world of writing and publishing in Wales – Jessica Dunrod and Manon Steffan Ros.

Our aim is to encourage the creation of stories for young children in Mudiad Meithrin’s community and beyond. The hope is that we will publish the stories of these new voices.

Author Jessica Dunrod said:

“I am delighted to collaborate with Mudiad Meithrin to embark on another project which will immediately address the lack of representation in Welsh language literature and the lack of real support and opportunities for Welsh writers. It was extremely difficult for me to make my books alone, let alone let the world know I created my titles and navigating gatekeepers within the industry. I’m thrilled that with this project, the next Black and Brown authors will not have it as hard as I did and I’m delighted that organisations such as Mudiad Meithrin are helping to break down barriers for underrepresented authors.”

Author Manon Steffan Ros said:

“It is a real honour for me to be part of the AwDura project. Wales has always been home to a very broad cross section of people, but this is not reflected in our culture at all, and it is time to put this right and take positive and constructive steps to ensure representation fair in our literature. This can only enrich our culture.”

To apply, applicants will need to send a 100-word e-mail or 1-minute film to gwenllian@meithrin.cymru by June 10, 2022, explaining why they should be chosen for this scheme.
