Join us for a whole day outdoors celebrating the natural environment. Over three days in April, in north, mid and south Wales we will explore the wonder of the outdoors, network and share new ideas – whatever the weather!
We will start the day with our keynote speaker:
Pete Moorhouse – Pete is an artist educator and an early years creative consultant. He has over 25 years’ experience of working as an Artist Educator within schools and settings. Pete is also an honorary research fellow at the University of Bristol and has researched creativity, critical thinking and reflective learning practice and assessment methods for monitoring creative progression. His work is inspired by his in-depth study of the Reggio Emilia approach, Froebelian principles and his research in Japan, New Zealand and USA.
In his presentation Pete will take us on a journey of creativity in the outdoors; risk taking in young children; risky play; the role of the enabling adult in the outdoors; physical literacy; how this links with the curriculum for Cylchoedd Meithrin and day nurseries.
There will then be the opportunity to attend three different workshops throughout the day. The workshops will take place in the outdoors as much as possible (there will be shelter if the weather is adverse.) Each workshop will explore the experiences that can be provided to young children from different perspectives. Joining Pete to deliver the workshops will be the actress and author, Leisa Mererid and Dr Glenda Tinney, Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Education and Humanities at the University of Wales, Trinity Saint David.
Leisa Mererid Dr Glenys Tinney
Workshop 1- How to develop creativity in the outdoors (in English): Pete will explore a holistic approach to the outdoors focusing on how to develop creativity in our young learners.
Workshop 2 – Mindfulness in young children (in Welsh – with simultaneous translation available) Leisa will demonstrate how to introduce yoga and breathing exercises to young children; what physical literacy means; where the child belongs in nature; and the effect nature can have on young children’s well-being.
Workshop 3 – How to develop communication and mathematical concepts in the outdoors (in Welsh – with simultaneous translation available) Glenda will explore how to develop children’s communication skills and mathematical concepts in the outdoors.
Helen Williams, Head of Training, Learning and Development at Mudiad Meithrin will also be joining us during the day to share information on training opportunities for practitioners in the outdoors.
To close the day there will be an opportunity to network and discuss with colleagues, along with some light refreshments.
The whole day will be free of charge, and we look forward to seeing you.
