The course is 18 months long and you are expected to be employed in the setting.
You are expected to attend monthly workshops for the first nine months. The workshops will be face to face in a location that’s suitable for the learner or on-line. The co-operation of the setting will be required to release the learner to attend these training days.
You need to be employed in a Cylch Meithrin or Welsh-medium Day Nursery. We will confirm if your setting is suitable for the course.
If you are not already employed at the cylch we can help you find a setting to do your course.
You must be employed in the same setting.
If you have a child who attends the planned workplace, you will need to discuss with the setting to see if it’s appropriate for you.
You don’t need to purchase any resources. You will receive a WJEC / City and Guild handbook, unit workbooks and a collection of digital resources for free as part of your course.
The Work
The assessor will visit the setting every month for two hours. During this time the assessor will observe your practice and assess your competence to work with children. The formal assessment will not happen until you are ready for it.
You will need to sit 1 multiple-choice test. This will show that you have the knowledge needed to work with children.
Language
Your Welsh will need to be sufficiently good for you to be able to work with children through the medium of Welsh, follow the workshops in Welsh and sit the tests in Welsh.
The Location
The setting will need to co-operate by agreeing to release the learner to attend training days and tests.

The process of assessing this qualification asks for close partnership working between the setting and the assessor.
The person responsible for the learner at the setting will need to hold regular progress meetings with the learner and the assessor. These meetings will be recorded and checked internally. It is important that the setting helps to ensure that the assessment process runs smoothly, and that the learner’s journey through the process is smooth.
The course is 24 months long and you are expected to be employed in the location. You are expected to attend a series of workshops during this 24 months. The workshops will be held digitally twice per month.
The qualification is suitable for anyone in a leadership and Management role within the Cylch Meithrin, Welsh-medium Day Nursery or Welsh-medium primary school.
If you work in a Welsh-medium Primary School you will need to be working as higher level assistant.
If you are not currently employed you will not be able to study this qualification.
If you have a child that attends your proposed workplace, you will need to discuss with the location to see if it’s appropriate for you to do your 16 hours at the location.
You will receive a City and Guilds handbook, unit handbooks and electronic resource all for free as part of your course.
As part of this qualifiction you will first study the Level 4 Preparing to Lead and Manage Children’s Care, Play, Learning and Development qualification before moving on to study the Level 5 Leadership and Care Management, Children’s Play, Learning and Development qualification. At the end of the 24 months you will be an eligible Level 5 Practitioner. You will need to complete:
- A project involving a series of tasks
- Portfolio of evidence
- Business Project
- Professional discussion
An assessor visits the setting monthly for two hours. During this time they will observe your practice managing and leading people in your work placement, working with them, to successfully implement your project.
Language
Your Welsh will need to be good enough to be able to work with children through the medium of Welsh, follow the workshops in Welsh and complete the assessments in Welsh.
The assessment of this qualification requires close partnership between the setting and the assessor.
The person with responsibility for the learner at the setting will need to hold regular progress meetings with the learner and the assessor. These meetings will be recorded and checked internally. It is important that the setting helps to ensure that the assessment process runs smoothly, and that the learner’s journey through the process is smooth. The setting will have a responsibility to contribute to the learner portfolio.
The assessor visits the setting monthly for two hours. During this time he will observe the learner’s practice managing and leading people in the work placement, working with them, in order to successfully implement the project.
