Changes to Statutory Sick Pay from April 2026

Changes have been made to Statutory Sick Pay (TSS) entitlements since the start of April 2026. Previously, an employee had to be sick for 3 working days and earn a minimum wage before they were eligible for statutory sick pay; but since the beginning of April this has changed to being sick for at least one full working day and no minimum wage.

As of April 2026, the criteria for Statutory Sick Pay are:

1. The staff member must have a contract, and have been working under that contract

2. They need to have been absent for at least one full working day

3. No minimum wage to be eligible for TSS from April 2026

4. Need to provide evidence of illness if absent for more than 7 days.

This will mean there will be additional costs to the cylch if members of staff are sick for less than 3 days. The Statutory Sick Pay Rate for 2026/27 is £123.25 per week, or 80% of average weekly income – whichever is lower.

A detailed presentation of all aspects of Statutory Sick Pay, and other funding issues, is available on our Finance and Grants website – Mudiad Meithrin. You can also ask your payroll company for advice.

FREE independent audit of accounts

Is your cylch registered as a CIO and does it have an annual income between £25,000 – £250,000? If so, you need to arrange an independent examination of the accounts by a financially competent person before submitting the Annual Report to the Commission (as well as submitting the annual return form, Trustees Annual Report (TAR), annual accounts). If you would like to take advantage of the opportunity to have a free independent examination by an experienced pro bono accountant, contact materionelusennol@meithrin.cymru as soon as

possible. NB – the accountant cannot prepare the accounts, but can offer support and guidance with the documents. It can cost over £500 to have an independent audit completed by a company or professional.

Remember – the early bird…!
